The Lovelines’ music doesn’t solely exist in a vacuum. Fierce militants of the new wave resurgence – a fast-paced, lo-fi movement steeped in darkwave and slick indie riffs – the Orlando, Florida-based duo has been hypnotising audiences since 2021, with their soulful debut effort ‘Strange Kind Of Love’ amassing more than one million streams on Spotify alone. Of course, their sound has evolved greatly as well, and while it did originally exhibit playful, wholesome character, The Lovelines have now embraced a gloomier, more epic take on their artistry.
‘Shades of Blue’ is the perfect evidence of that. Echoing a whole plethora of like-minded creatives (from Faerybabyy to Mareaux, among others), the brother and sister duo engage in nostalgic new wave tones and expansive lyricism, making for a vibrant fever dream that’s as cathartic as it is electrifying.
As The Lovelines explain: “Shades of Blue wasn’t written to be a Lovelines song, it was me pretending I was writing a song for New Order. There’s this romanticism to New Wave music. And so, though it isn’t an obvious music genre choice for us, judging from our catalogue, it’s an obvious thematic choice, I think.”
