Haunting, fiery and intense, ‘The Show’ captured our attention almost instantly. Steeped in a unique concoction of post-punk, darkwave and new wave elements, the single well showcases The Girls Upstairs’ eclectic artistry, an ethos that’s rather gloomy and decadent, steeped in sharp and hypnotising tones. Plus, they self-produced their material.
They are from New York City, and to be fair, they couldn’t be from anywhere else: the vivid melancholia and understated rage are consistent with the Big Apple’s fragmented and nuanced landscape. Lyrically, ‘The Show’ explores the magnetic tension of entering a familiar yet irresistible situation, with the chorus, “I already know where this won’t go, but I love a show”, capturing the eerie excitement of being both the spectacle and the observer.
