The Burbs Return with Bittersweet, Introspective Rock Episode

A rather young outfit, The Burbs have emerged onto the Australian music scene only last year, dumping a series of demos packed with the group’s signature stylish, chaotic rock flair. Constantly oscillating between grunge, post-punk and alt-rock influences, The Burbs simply interpret the modern world with a touch of nostalgia, finding a worthy refuge in fuzzy and heavy guitar tones and a surprisingly evocative melodic contour. Formed by Danny Valitutti, Peri Brown, and Brook McKeon, and based in Bells Beach, Victoria, the band has recently unveiled their latest offering, ‘There’s No Time for Presents’.

A proper studio recording, the single feels sharp and bold, yet also controlled and poised, with gentle verses smoothly shifting into crunchier gears in the choruses. It’s here that we can observe The Burbs at their best; placing vocals and their introspective, relatable storytelling at the forefront, the Aussie heroes craft a welcoming, approachable gem, a track that targets a wide audience, although retaining its gritty charisma. Rough around the edges, yet diligent.

Recorded by Aaron Dobos at Sing Sing Studios, ‘There’s No Time for Presents’ delves into decisively personal themes, with the occasional sadness interrupted by the record’s overall warmth and punch. Writing about the fear of letting down loved ones and the stress of dealing with such a duty, the song feels surprisingly bittersweet, a slice of rock energy hiding nuanced lyricism.
