There’s a great deal of technical prowess and nuanced musicianship in Talkline’s music. The artistic union of vocalist Amy Hollingsworth and pianist Will Hobson, the project benefits from contemporary, eclectic jazz tones, intricate rhythms, and an inventive, refreshing dialectic between piano and vocals, with Hollingsworth not limiting herself to a singing role. Her malleable, precise vocals are also used as an improvisational entity, constantly developing the melodic and rhythmic fabric of the duo’s material.
Take ‘In My Head’, for instance. Talkline’s latest effort, the track benefits from Amy’s polyrhythmic vocal patterns and a charmingly ‘spoken’ delivery. Such vibrant energy is matched by Will’s frantic, roaring piano lines, kickstarting a truly kaleidoscopic arrangement, oscillating between jazz, post-rock, and leftfield. In fact, a decadent, reverb-soaked guitar (performed by Harry Mercer) truly scrambles the listening experience, bringing a great deal of alternative flair in an otherwise elegant, if jagged, environment.
Hobson and Hollingworth do an excellent job on ‘In My Head’, and it’s obvious how both are insanely talented musicians and composers. Their ability to work together for the greater good is particularly on display here. They move as a collective. The track was recorded at Boathouse Studio in Suffolk, with Adam Bowers on production duties, Rory Hudson on bass and Anmol Mohara on drums.
