Sweeter than Sorrow’s ‘somersaults’ is a Haunting and Elegant Masterpiece

‘somersaults’ is the hauntingly beautiful new single from Mattias Wåhlberg, a Gothenburg-based pianist, vocalist, and producer who performs under the moniker of Sweeter than Sorrow. It’s the third time he has collaborated with fellow Swedish singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jonas Franke-Blom, and the pair just get better and better with each release. On ‘somersaults’, a piano-led and ethereal masterpiece, Wåhlberg finds comfort and strength in the beauty of love. “To cultivate love in yourself, nurture it daily,” he says. “Make your chest soften from the inside and out. It’s worth it a thousand times”.

I’m not entirely sure what genre ‘somersaults’ would technically fall into. Contemporary pop? Soft rock? Indie folk? I’ll let you be the judge. Because, if I’m being completely honest, I’m not bothered by its label. What I can tell you for certain is that it’s, unquestionably, one of the most elegant, alluring, and enthralling tunes of the year.

Wåhlberg uses Sweeter than Sorrow as an outlet to dive further into vulnerable and personal spaces. You can hear the honesty, courage, and boldness shine through beautifully in his rich and full-bodied vocals. I’ve fallen deeply in love with the nostalgia-laced ‘somersaults’, and I can’t wait to hear what this absurdly talented artist gets up to next!
