Hypnotic and nocturne, ‘Magnifier’ moves with intimacy and hidden melancholia, with a wealth of electronic goodness helping the listener fully immerse in such a powerful track. Cascading synths and cinematic textures go a long way towards creating an escapist paradise, a place where one can escape reality, even just for a mere four minutes. Drenched in luscious and evocative female vocals, courtesy of the talented Burcu Bahar Aydin, ‘Magnifier’ provides a striking evidence of Stomp Box Choir’s artistic prowess, also serving as a manifesto of sorts; an indication of what we can expect from the British project going forward.
Based in London, Stomp Box Choir is self-described as a collective formed by longtime friends and collaborators Howsie, who handles production duties, and Joe Stratton, who handles all songwriting. Citing the likes of Massive Attack, Daft Punk, Air, and Maribou State as some of their biggest influences, the group unveiled an aural landscape that’s genre-bending and bold, while keeping a relatable and meaningful lyrical outlook. ‘Magnifier’ is Joe and Howsie’s debut effort.
Delving deeper into the project, Howsie explains: “Self-recorded and produced earlier this year at my home studio in Finsbury Park, it marks the start of a project we’d like to define by freedom, emotion, and experimentation.” Mission accomplished; while the project is in its infancy, it’s also rather authentic and specific, with the talented pair having clear ideas about where they are headed. We’ll be here supporting.
