Step Into William Blake’s Romantic Songs with French Outfit {Blake}

{Blake} approach the subject matter with a certain eclecticism and a keen sense of romance, allowing William’s work to find a cohesive aural counterpart.

Well, this is a first! As the name implies, French art-rock outfit {Blake} embodies a pretty unique ethos. In fact, they are described to us as “the only band in the world to have set the complete Songs of English Romantic poet William Blake to music.” The group has been active for the best part of two decades, and has focused on translating Blake’s poems, Songs of Innocence and of Experience, into a musical setting. The result is four like-minded albums, which are now being re-released digitally via the CASC label.

You see, there’s a crucial milestone ahead, with 2027 marking two centuries since the death of the notable English poet. To celebrate the occasion, {Blake} have been reissuing their past albums in reverse order, starting with ‘IV. Here & Now’ in 2024, followed by ‘III. Heathen & Heaven’ in 2025, and ‘II. Lost & Found’ just a few weeks ago. A final album release, ‘Innocence & Experience’, is also planned for next year.

From a musical standpoint, we are pretty impressed by the highly meaningful outlook enjoyed by {Blake}. Furthermore, they approach the subject matter with a certain eclecticism and a keen sense of romance, allowing William’s work to find a cohesive aural counterpart. Influences are all over the place, jumping from chamber pop, progressive rock and folk-lenient melodies. The addition of strings and double bass adds a strong sense of elegance and timeless allure.

{Blake} are gearing up for an international tour in 2027, with their final date set to take place in London. Stay tuned for details!
