Judging by the heightened poignancy and evocative charge in ‘Early in the Morning’, one might be persuaded into believing the piece to be sung by an American troubadour, perhaps one with roots in the Appalachian region. Thanks to his gravelly, smoky voice and the heartfelt minimalism of his lyrical delivery, talented outfit Soul Zimon & His Kozmic Combinations are prone to being mistaken as such. Instead, they hail from the Nordics, sharing roots in Sweden and Norway. In fairness, country and Americana have quite a big following there.
Zooming into ‘Early in the Morning’, the listener is met with a hypnotic, slow-paced acoustic guitar. Both tender and charismatic, the record gently uncovers a wealth of lyrical wisdom and nostalgic imagery, with Soul Zimon & His Kozmic Combinations then flooding the piece with wholesome, elegant vocals set to deeply connect with the listeners. Despite such a stripped-back ethos, the piece is surprisingly powerful and melancholic.
Delving deeper into ‘Early in the Morning’, Soul Zimon & His Kozmic Combinations explain: “The song was written during hard times, drawing its inspiration and sound from the golden age of folk, Americana and country music; the 60s-70s. It is deliberately stripped down to its most sensitive form, as it was largely in the feeling and mood when it was written. We hope that is felt through the song and the feeling.” Goal achieved.
