Sophia Dashing: “Embodying a Potent Persona is Part of My Daily Life”

There’s a new pop Queen in town, and her name is Sophia Dashing. Exuding fierceness, energy and charisma, the talented American creative has recently unveiled her latest effort, ‘ROLLERCOASTER’, an all-out pop masterpiece that’s as hard-hitting as it is sultry and sharp. It’s giving hyper-pop, it’s giving minimalism, it’s giving cheeky; ‘ROLLERCOASTER’ is exactly how we would imagine a modern pop banger sounding like.

Hailing from Los Angeles, Dashing has already amassed a sizeable audience on social media. Boasting a colourful, bold and dynamic aesthetic, the rising songtress holds everything it takes to become a worldwide phenomenon, and we suspect it’s just a matter of time before that happens. ‘ROLLERCOASTER’ features the expert production of gareth. and Alto Moon, birthing a piece that’s not that far from cultural icons such as Britney Spears and Charlie XCX.

Intrigued by the project, we caught up with Sophia Dashing to learn more about her artistry and future goals… Interview below!

Hey Sophia, thanks for chatting with us! You pop charisma in undeniable, and your bright, uplifting artistic universe appears to be on an upward trajectory. Does such a potent persona reflect who you truly are?

Thank you, I really appreciate it! Absolutely, I was surrounded by a lot of strong women growing up, so I absolutely think that having a potent persona is a part of my everyday life, especially as an independent female artist. I would say I definitely have a chill side to me though when I’m not performing haha!

Are there any fellow popstars that inspire you to get better day after day? Or a crucial influence that motivated you to be the best you can?

Absolutely, I would say all of the pop divas right now, truly every woman that has made their mark in this industry has inspired me in more ways than one. I’m really loving Zara Larsson’s new album rollout right now and Midnight Sun!

People might know this, but you are also a keen dancer, a quality that gives you a wide pool of creative skills to draw from. Is there anyone or a particular school that was important in your musical and dancing upbringing?

I did most of my training at Gotta dance ATL which is no longer a studio, but I was chosen to be a protégé from a young age and was signed to Bloc South dance agency when I was super young and had the opportunity to work with so many amazing celebrity choreographers, who believed in me from the start – which truly impacted my training as a child. I’m super grateful for everything I received in my hometown of Atlanta, with my performance and dance training.

You have just released a strikingly fierce single, ‘ROLLERCOASTER’. Drenched in EDM influences, the piece is catchy and electrifying, just like the summer we are all living in. What does the song mean to you?

This song is truly just about embodying bad bitch energy. When you hit play, you instantly feel like your alter ego, which is essential for just feeling confident, feeling good about yourself and tapping into that side that may not be as easy to connect with on an everyday basis. It’s such a good song for a party vibe, to dance, to glam up to, really just to tap into the confident, sassy, fierce version of yourself!

From a production and recording standpoint, are there any collaborators you teamed up with? I love the rather minimalist approach to the beat, slowly evolving and never overpowering your vocals.

I collaborated with gareth. and Alto Moon, and they are absolutely the dream team. I adore both of them, and I’m so grateful that we all found our way to each other. I truly feel like I make the best music I’ve ever made with them, so I’m super grateful for all the new music that’s coming out that we’ve all kept in the vault for a minute now!!

Do you feel more confident writing music alone or within a team?

I think both! Collaboration is amazing, you truly learn more about yourself as a writer when you team up with other writers. But of course, writing is a part of my everyday life, so I’m always writing by myself! Lately, I have been enjoying collaborating and writing with other songwriters.

Artistically speaking, what challenges have the last two years presented you with?

I would say just keep the momentum up and don’t give up on being an independent artist. The journey can get super tough sometimes. But when something is your purpose, and you feel so drawn, and your soul just lights up when you do it every day, there’s no question about whether to keep going or not! But there are definitely hard days, and I think every artist starting out has experienced those days.

What are the next steps for your project? Anything exciting on the horizon?

We just filmed a music video on the Santa Monica pier, which was super exciting. We literally whipped it together in two weeks, which was super crazy! But I’m used to my releases coming together super quickly with being independent. What’s next for me is to perform and to promote my latest two singles, ‘PHENOMENON’ and ‘ROLLERCOASTER’, and I’m super excited to do that because performing is truly one of my favourite parts about what I do! Thank you 🙂
