Oscillating between liminal orchestral soundscapes and cathartic electronica, ‘Scania’ provides a listening experience like no other. Simply, we were completely hypnotised by it, kidnapped by the track’s outstanding beauty and haunting elegance. It’s also extremely well produced, a factor that greatly enhances the piece’s aural impact. This was a surprise at first, but it soon made sense, given that behind such a lush offering, there’s an esteemed and accomplished composer, Grant Borland.
Even if you haven’t heard his name, chances are you have already heard his music. With credits in Netflix, Apple TV and Disney+ productions, it’s clear that Borland belongs to cinematic Olympus, one of the select few sonic wizards who help moving pictures come to life. ‘Scania’ is out now under the moniker Soek; compared to his day-to-day endeavour, Borland’s original moniker navigates bolder and riskier waters. The debut single is the perfect example of that, a stream of authentic cinematic matter with a quirky leftfield character.
Speaking about the record, Borland explains: “‘Scania’ was inspired shortly after a journey I took to Iceland in August of 2024. It’s somewhat of a love letter to that trip, I guess you could say, and the song serves as a mental snapshot of my time there. I started writing this track about a month or two after this trip, and while I liked the song, I sat on it for a while because I felt like it was missing something.”
