Listening to ‘Together Apart’ is somewhat nostalgic. If, like us, you grew up in the early ‘2000, you might be familiar with catchy pop-punk, a brand of intense, potent guitar-coded music that took the world by storm back then. Honestly, it never really went away, and it is clearly evident in the record. Guided by Smii’s unapologetic, fierce vocals, the track weaves in between relatable, melodic poo-punk and more fringe, alt-rock sections. In fact, ‘Together Apart’ is a piece that knows how to embrace its darker and heavier side when needed.
Hailing from Duisburg, Germany, Smii has debuted back in November with ‘Waste a Life’, soon followed by ‘Roots of Plastic’ and now by ‘Together Apart’. It seems quite obvious how they are all part of a larger record, which we hope will be available later this year. Overall, the contrast between heavy and catchier moods is manifested through Smii’s whole discography so far. It’s a dualism that works, allowing the German creative to appeal to a larger audience.
Reiterating the simple yet nuanced ethos that propels his music, Smii explains: “Straightforward rock production. No glitter. No Glamour. Maybe a few tears, but that is it. And that is what we wanted.” Mission achieved: ‘Together Apart’ is a no-frills, hard-hitting blast of punk-rock energy, hiding a meaningful layer underneath all of that punch.
