Take Skint, for instance: the Seattle-based rapper has recently unveiled a powerful thematic album, a slice of retro-coded hip-hop drenched in personal lyricism and striking storytelling. Aptly titled ‘Identity Crisis’, the record documents a year-long journey through mental health struggles, self-discovery, and the pursuit of diagnosis and understanding.
Featured in the LP, ‘Thoughten Up’ has been brought to our attention, a timely and personal cut seeking to “tackle the way men are conditioned from childhood to suppress their emotions and push through.” It reiterates such a crucial message these days, one that will hopefully connect with the young generation. From a music standpoint, the track feels fierce and honest, a slice of unfiltered authenticity with tons of sonic charisma and catchy vocal delivery. The nostalgic vinyl scratches are the cherry on the cake, as far as we are concerned!
Delving deeper into the meaningful ethos that propels the whole album, Skint explains: “I wrote countless songs throughout this process as a form of self-discovery. These are the songs that made the cut and present the story arc of my journey from beginning to end.” We feel as though it is rather crucial for him to talk so openly about his mental health journey, as chances are someone out there is going through the same issues and could relate, even learn from it.
