Eloquently describing their music as ‘glitchgaze’, the Los Angeles-based duo Siren Section doesn’t hide from the fact that they enjoy a great deal of eclecticism. Taking cues from anything introspective and evocative – be it fringe electronica, dream pop or shoegaze – sonic voyagers John and James craft a compelling, intricate aural picture, one that’s packed with atmospheric synths, lush guitars and noisy drum machines.
‘Glass Cannon’ is the perfect example of that. Siren Section’s latest effort, the piece sees the American musicians embark on a rather emotional and nostalgic journey balanced between shimmering, buoyant elegance and darker, gloomier industrial flair. Such a heart-shaking tension – constantly bubbling under the surface – provides a vibrant, nostalgic listening experience, even more relevant when taking into account the lyrical theme.
Delving into a failing relationship and the need to overcome difficulties, ‘Siren Section’ strives to stay true to themselves. In this case, that means making great music, which they fully achieve. Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Glass Cannon’, they reiterate: “This song is about coping with a disintegrating relationship and world view in a destructive, escapist way. It’s something really personal to us”.
