Sinularia Expand Their Abstract, Imaginative Work in ‘Subwater Beats II’

We have always taken pride in discovering music that goes against the grain, leftfield records with a heightened futuristic flair. ‘Subwater Beats II’ is exactly that. Penned by Berlin-based boundary-pushing trio Sinularia, the album feels incredibly unique and abstract. Navigating the wide and varied highway that takes it from jazz to electronica and beyond, the record offers a listening experience like no other. References are completely scrambled, with Sinularia focusing on intricate rhythms and imaginative, hazy sound design. The result could be compared to a witty blend of Aphex Twin and Nils Petter Molvaer, among others.

Whichever way you look at it, ‘Subwater Beats II’ stands tall on its own, showcasing the German trio’s extensive artistic research and imaginative musicianship. You see, Jo Wespel (aka Beatdenker), Felix Henkelhausen, and Max Santner move with purpose, knowing full well where they are headed. Labelling their genre as ‘Subwater Beats’, Sinularia pairs organic instrumentations with sharp synth tones, drawing a haunting, enigmatic aural soundscape that’s ever evolving and rather twitchy and furious.

Speaking about their work, the German group explains: “Through improvisational concepts and latitudes within multilayered structures, as well as a synthesis of acoustic instruments and electronic soundscapes, we create our music with all our overall influences. In the end, we call it ‘Subwater Beats’, a positive, intense, floating, fat, humorous, fluid, rich, eventful, postcontemporary, challenging, creative music with three clearly political persons.”
