If we had to describe ‘*(Asterisk)’ in one word, we’d probably choose ‘elegance’. That’s also its most surprising trait; for a record steeped in guitars and gentle rock matter, one wouldn’t quite expect it. Yet, it’s all down to Simeon Kierkegaard‘s brilliant artistry, capable of blending fiery, striking compositions with an alluring, lush sonic palette and smooth, cathartic vocals.
‘Wave After Wave’ is a definite stand-out for us: featuring majestic orchestral strings arranged by Fiachra Trench, the track takes the listeners on a magic carpet ride through spacious textures and expansive lyricism, then lulled by Simeon’s buttery-smooth vocals and loving delivery. Follow-up ‘Here I Stand’ returns to uptempo territories, also incorporating a certain indie quality in its overall formula.
A long-standing effort, ‘*(Asterisk)’ took shape over a decade, gradually rising to Kirkegaard’s vibrant and sensible artistry and expectations. Like a tasty slow-cooked meal – complex at first yet rewarding at the end – the record eventually bloomed into artistic glory, a slice of wholesome melodies and vulnerable lyricism. As people say, good things take time.
Our second favourite after ‘Wave after Wave’? ‘Ocean Life Living’ – funny how the titles somehow relate to each other! A punchy and anthemic gem, the track showcases Simeon’s ability to embrace all-out euphoria, when needed.
