We don’t get a lot of concept albums anymore; the format has certainly been fading in recent years, counterpointed by a rise in digestible, short and relatable singles. Yet, Serge Clivio is not interested in aligning with the mainstream crowd, instead pursuing authentic artistry steeped in personal, evocative lyricism. ‘SONGS FROM AN UNEXPECTED SEASON’ is exactly that, a slice of tenderness and nostalgia wrapped into an elegant aural livery. There’s a reason Clivio felt so emotional and driven while writing the album. Back in 2021, he was diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin’s lymphoma, an event that marked a radical shift in Clivio’s life journey.
While he’s now three years in remission, that painful period has tested Serge’s willpower and overall beliefs, sparking an artistic reckoning that now manifests into a large, thematic album. In ‘SONGS FROM AN UNEXPECTED SEASON’, we find a cascade of introspective, wistful pieces, all wrapped in luminescent and eclectic contemporary pop and poignant orchestral flair. Clivio’s malleable, luscious vocals guide the listeners with honesty and confidence, slowly unfurling and decoding his own challenging experiences.
What’s more, the record also includes a series of original voicemail messages from loved ones, a rather special feature, especially in such a peculiar context. Overall, ‘SONGS FROM AN UNEXPECTED SEASON’ is not your average album. It requires time and understanding, and while not everyone will completely relate to Clivio’s story, we are confident it will serve well as a reminder of how fragile life can be.
