Our last encounter with Irish troubadour Sean MacLeod is dated November ‘25. On that occasion, we celebrated ‘Cool Charisma’ as “a vibrant, wholesome effort”, a description that well fits one of MacLeod’s previous singles, too, ‘Light Up The Sun’. In truth, a few things have happened this year for Sean. Alongside working on brand new material, he also unveiled a whole album, ‘That’s When the Earth Becomes a Star’, a ten-track collection available only on Bandcamp. It also happens to be MacLeod’s fifth solo album to date.
For now, we’ll focus on ‘Light Up The Sun’, a piece that showcases the lyrical malleability and catchy melodism enjoyed by the Irish talent. Not included in the album, the single stands up on its own leg, venturing onto retro rock territories with unapologetic charisma and timeless allure. MacLeod’s vocals are elegant and luscious as always, constantly sharing a heartwarming and hopeful quality.
Taking a cue from his previous experience as a founding member of Dublin-based band Cisco, MacLeod champions a rather eclectic perspective on his music, drawing from a wide and nostalgic pool of influences. As we are told: “The project draws from the sound of many sixties groups such as the Beatles, the Beach Boys and Motown, but also merges other styles like folk and classical, and even elements of the Avant Garde.” It’s this cross-genre quality that makes Sean’s music so fresh and relatable.
There’s a new record coming later this year, a 6th album of experimental music called ‘We Don’t See What We Don’t See’. Stay tuned.
