Sean Macleod Returns with Uplifting Single ‘Romeo’

Marking our point of entry into Sean Macleod’s vibrant, wholesome artistic universe, ‘Romeo’ unfurls a rather approachable and comfy character, a heartwarming and partly nostalgic pop-rock livery that confirms the Irish creative’s relatable songwriting allure and eclectic influences. Such a statement rings true also for Sean’s latest album, ‘New Start’, released earlier this year. That’s where ‘Romeo’ takes its cue from.

Formerly part of Irish group Cisco – a successful endeavour that saw him and the band recording with U2’s collaborator Paul Barrett – Macleod is now embracing his solo career. He seems more inspired and motivated than ever, as ‘New Start’ clearly showcases. When taking the album into account, one realises that ‘Romeo’ is actually one of the most uplifting pieces the project has released to date. Others range from psychedelic forays to decadent, vintage pop episodes, passing through curious Britpop explorations.

The constant in it all is represented by Sean’s evocative, malleable vocals, constantly delivered with a quirky lo-fi attitude, as if wanting to turn back the clock to the 90s. ‘Romeo’ shares that feature too, then turning its attention to catchy guitar motifs and groovy drum patterns. While the record doesn’t seek to reinvent the wheel, it does something simple and familiar very well, and that’s an achievement in itself.
