Evoking a futuristic, space-laden aural landscape, ‘Holding Pattern’ sees retro-inspired duo Max MacReady unveiling their highly hypnotic and vintage character, championing a blend of synthwave, post-punk, and electronic influences that’s hard not to love. Hailing from London, the project sees creatives and sonic explorers Max Macready and Kurt Precinct uniting as a cohesive, committed creative entity, finding a worthy refuge in a musical space that’s gloomy and mysterious, but also dreamy and lush.
A flurry of arpeggiated synths gives ‘Holding Pattern’ its mesmerising quality, laying the groundwork for Precinct’s sombre, magical vocals, here soaked into a magical lo-fi goo, and an euphoric, striking guitar solo. Such solo instils a touch of 80s glam in what’s otherwise a purely synthetic and positively robotic effort. Moreover, there are hints of spoken words that remind us of space communication, perhaps a nod to the group’s sci-fi ambitions.
Delving deeper into their imagery and aesthetic, Max MacReady explain: “It’s a pulsing, analogue-infused piece about reading all the right signals, but hesitating at the edge of connection. It’s emotionally grounded, yet steeped in sci-fi imagery, like a cassette broadcast from a lost timeline.” This statement sets the scene nicely, as we approach ‘Holding Pattern’ ready for takeoff. Who knows where we’ll end up travelling to?
