We featured Essex-based singer and songwriter S J Denney very recently, welcoming his latest EP ‘The Moods That Follow’. An introspective and relatable gem we described as “a collection of alternative, soft rock songs that pierce through you while listening to the detailed instrumentation and zoning into his raw vocals and contemplative, poetical lyrics.” Back then, it was clear how he had his artistry figured out. Naturally, we were expecting Denney to take a break until next year. Instead, the British talent surprises us all with a Christmas tune, ‘Wishful Thinking’. Written back in the summer, the record fulfils the artist’s desire to release a festive track. Well, we can safely say he reached his goal. ‘Wishful Thinking’ is a heartwarming gem, an intimate and poignant jewel capable of replicating the magic of Xmas, even if only for a mere three minutes.
Built over a luscious orchestral arrangement, the song champions wholesome piano tones, glockenspiel melodies and strings harmonies. It all serves the higher purpose of enhancing S J Denney’s stirring vocals, declaring their love and appreciation for the magic of Christmas.
