As it stands, Robyn Maddox has made it a habit of releasing one record per year. We are okay with that, as long as the quality remains as high as it has been. Drenched in melodic nostalgia and cinematic elegance, Maddox has created an artistic universe that’s hypnotic and timeless, constantly balancing modern indie-rock sensibilities with vintage soulful elements and dramatic hooks. What more could you wish for?
‘RUBBERNECK’ is the perfect example of that, a single that marks Robyn’s return to the music industry (although she never really left). Furthermore, we are happy to report that there’s an EP on the horizon, ‘HEIST’, expected on November 20th. Alongside producer and co-writer Darragh Tibbs, Maddox gives ‘RUBBERNECK’ a grittier sonic livery, with a heightened amount of guitars and an overall carefree feel, almost sleazy at times.
Delving deeper into the single’s lyrical ethos, Maddox explains: “This song is a biting and frustrated look at self-sabotage and a desire to create distance between the parts of yourself that drag you down… My goal with this whole EP was to write something that felt like it wasn’t about love or romance, but something deeply personal… it would mean the world to me if even one person listened to this song and thought ‘I feel like that’ or ‘I know exactly what she means’.”
