Michi Gets Bold and Flirty in New Single ‘Short Story’

‘Short Story’ doesn’t need much to stand out; its acoustic-powered, minimalist production is the perfect choice to fully highlight a well-written, layered piece.

At first glance, ‘Short Story’ might sound familiar, yet there’s more to it than meets the eye (or the ear, in this case). You see, such a flirtatious, sultry song would typically be inserted into a heterosexual dynamic, with a male singer taking the lead role in it. Yet, Michi takes a bold new approach to it, translating such a storyline into a sapphic and Queer context. This feels rather fresh and exciting, quite the statement from the talented songstress.

Originally from the US and now based in Madrid, Michi doesn’t hesitate to insert a slice of flirty Spanish language into the mix, with fellow artist Dunkan giving the record a hypnotic spoken-word verse. The alchemy between his deep, haunting tone and Michi’s expansive and commanding vocals works very well, creating strategic tension and then releasing it at the right moment. Overall, ‘Short Story’ doesn’t need much to stand out; its acoustic-powered, minimalist production is the perfect choice to fully highlight a well-written, layered piece.

Delving deeper into the reflective and observant lyrical ethos that propels the song, Michi explains: “I wanted to write about a relationship that has an expiration date, but without the sadness. There’s something exciting about two people knowing exactly what this is and deciding to enjoy it anyway. Songs don’t usually tell this story from the point of view of a woman as the seductress. And certainly not a lesbian one.” For anyone keen, there’s an album on the horizon; Michi is often accompanied by her band, Michi & the Cats.
