Robin Swann Unveils Honest, Vulnerable Jewel ‘flaunt u’

Can a song be meaningful and sonically interesting at the same time? Robin Swann provides strong evidence of it, packing honest, vulnerable lyricism into liminal, leftfield pop matter with a contemporary outlook. ‘flaunt u’ is exactly that, a wholesome, deep exploration of Queer identity and pride, especially when confronted with societal expectations and a potentially negative family environment. The single continues Swann’s impressive foray into the music industry, following up on a string of unique, striking records.

Hailing from Salt Lake City, Robin is not alone in this adventure, with producer Xander Lee taking care of production duties. It’s an artistic collaboration that works very well: Lee’s boundary-pushing and experimental sound design perfectly adapts to Swann’s dynamic, luscious vocal tone, often engaging in smooth, honey-like, catchy melodies. Yet, even among such deep creativity, the pair’s references are steeped in seminal figures such as Carly Rae Jepsen and Peach PRC.

Drawing from personal experience, ‘flaunt u’ follows Robin Swann’s own journey of growth and resilience. Faced with a traditional family environment, the talented songstress finds it difficult to disclose her relationship with a fellow girl. As she explains: “The song epitomises a desire shared by many queer individuals facing homophobia — the dream to freely and openly express one’s love for their partner without fearing the discrimination or judgement of those around them, as well as the guilt of not being able to do so.”
