There’s a heightened sense of nostalgia and retro allure behind ‘Wayward Wind’. It doesn’t seek to reinvent the wheel; instead, it finds a fitting refuge in brooding country-pop territories and Americana melancholy. Californian troubadour Robbie Mangiardi does a great job on the vocals and the songwriting, infusing the track with his deep, resonant vocals, a tone that feels extremely timeless and anthemic.
‘Wayward Wind’ also ships with a compelling and vibrant music video, developed by Thai artist JAY JAY Kerospath using AI imagery and real-life footage. It’s a perfect companion to a piece that feels quite cinematic and epic, one that fully reflects that creative ethos that propels the project. Alongside Robbie Mangiardi, the record also features gifted collaborators such as percussionist Martin Flores, bassist Rene Camacho, pedal steel player Bob Bernstein, and keyboardist Neil Rosengarden.
From a lyrical standpoint, the track aims to inspire any keen listener out there, drawing from Mangiardi’s complex personal experience and practising accountability and honesty. As Robbie explains: “It is an appeal to our better selves… to get a grip on a higher calling”. We suspect a large audience will resonate with such a powerful message, especially during today’s dark times. Yet, the lyrical core behind ‘Wayward Wind’ stems from Mangiardi’s willingness to embrace his better self, tracing a striking divide with some of the mistakes of his youth.
