A nugget of uplifting energy and contemporary pop allure, ‘I Can’t Talk To My Friends’ feels incredibly modern, yet also steeped in nostalgic references. A blend between playfulness à là The 1975 and fragments of eclectic synth-pop (think Prince, Gloria Estefan), the record showcases the commendable songwriting and recording work of RIMENY, the talented artist behind the track. You see, he’s not your average creative…
Having spent years as a producer and engineer for others, always behind a desk, RIMENY makes a conscious choice to enter the limelight himself by embracing a bright, uplifting and carefree pop imprint. It is working well so far. Known by day as Zak Engel, the talented aural alchemist is laying the foundations for a potentially prominent solo career, especially given his technical and artistic skills. Lyrically, ‘I Can’t Talk To My Friends’ feels quirky and tongue-in-cheek, at least in its vocal delivery.
Delving deeper into the inspiration behind the piece, RIMENY explains: “I’ve always loved the first thirty seconds of The Postal Service’s ‘Such Great Heights’, but I struggled to connect with the rest of it because of the drum programming. As a composer and producer, I’ve often felt nervous approaching rhythm sections: navigating the low end, the countless sound choices, and the technicalities of songwriting. I Can’t Talk to My Friends reflects getting over that insecurity and my deep appreciation for electronic and dance music.”
