Hailing from California, nostalgic rock outfit Reduction in Force has recently returned with ‘What’s Next?’, an expansive and anthemic cut that’s as fuzzy and intense as it is meaningful and complex. Crucially, it’s delivered to us with a wonderful stop-motion video, a close look at the American artist’s home studio, a space where toy animals and instruments come alive, unveiling a fantasy world that’s as irresistible as it is fictitious.
Known by day as Mike Mills, Reduction in Force was brought up on a diet of 80s and 90s staples, including the likes of Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Human League, New Order, and Peter Gabriel, among others. Navigating rock, new wave and synth-pop, Mills is able to evoke a sonic charge that’s eclectic and genre-bending, yet also quite familiar and relatable. Marking Reduction in Force’s debut single, ‘What’s Next?’ is very likely the beginning of a triumphal artistic journey.
Delving deeper into the ethos behind the video, Reduction in Force explains: “Create in the same room long enough, and it’s likely to become a three-dimensional map of one’s personality. That’s especially true for musicians. Step inside a musician’s home studio, and music listeners will know exactly what kind of music he makes; and more importantly, how intense his attachment to that music is.”
