Hailing from Richmond, VA, Private Practice has recently unveiled his self-titled debut EP, a five-track opal that blurs the line between indie-leaning, post-rock euphoria and quirky pop territories. Boasting past militancy in local bands such as White Laces and Opin, Private Practice is none other than the solo project of Landis Wine.
From a sonic standpoint, ‘Private Practice’ is the sort of record that would catch our attention. Slightly jagged and rough on the edges, the EP makes us feel as if we just stumbled upon a hidden jewel, an indie-pop masterpiece rooted in alternative energy and unconventional formulas. In practice, this translates into a mix of gritty, fuzzy guitars and playful electronic textures, with Landis’ hypnotic and otherworldly vocals crowning it all in leftfield fashion. Personally, we are big fans of the record’s opener ‘Kords’, certainly one of the most tender episodes on the EP. If you vibe more with the opposite of that, the chaotic ‘A Punch’ might be a good point of entry.
Recalling the personal creative process that led to the EP, Wine explains: “Back in January, when the East Coast got hit with a few waves of ice and snow, I sat down with an open tuning I had stumbled into on my acoustic guitar and wrote an entire batch of new material. I hadn’t attempted to do this in over a decade. It felt a little awkward, ungainly, and exposed, but I leaned into the impulse, hunkered down at my studio, and recorded it myself.”
