Noum Shares Blissful Jewel ‘Shillings’

Extremely immersive and cathartic, ‘Shillings’ could be likened to a sensory deprivation experience: wrapping the listener in blissful textures and abstract musical structures, the record manages to evoke its own alternative universe, a place where one is able to float freely with childish innocence, gently culled by Noum’s soft and luscious vocals. The Swiss-based songstress has long championed an experimental look over traditional folk and contemporary electronica, allowing her to depict her sonic aspiration with unmatched precision.

The result of such an enlightening compositional work is ‘Shillings’, Noum’s latest effort. Incorporating classical elements, mellow vocal harmonies and guitar arpeggios, the record proves to be a meaningful and wholesome discovery for every keen listener, and frankly, listening to Noum resembles more a spiritual experience than a pure musical endeavour. That’s how special it is.

Describing the inspiration behind the piece, the Swiss talent explains: “A few years ago I came across a receipt of costs associated with the trial of two Scottish women convicted of witchcraft in the late 16th century. I built a song around them, a sort of sonic memorial for the lost victims of modern society.”
