We must say, ‘The Imperfectionist’ is a timeless album. Packed with diverse folklore references, the record touches upon tango, blues and afrobeat, ultimately providing music that one can dance to, the soundtrack to simple good times. Of course, it’s not a body of work for everyone: it’s not exactly ‘contemporary’ in its most obvious sense. Yet, it’s still modern and urgent, the direct expression of Nothing Concrete’s limitless artistry.
A self-described ‘multicultural band’, Nothing Concrete was originally founded by Fergus McKay and Gaia Miato in Scotland, before relocating to France (Foix). Rallying around a pool of musicians and creatives, they were able to build the project as the kaleidoscopic powerhouse it is today. Having just rounded off a show at the iconic Glastonbury Festival, in the UK, ‘The Imperfectionist’ adds to the group’s global allure.
Recorded in 2024, the record benefits from a self-built, eco-friendly studio, certainly an inspiring setting that we are confident helped Nothing Concrete craft such playful and positive material. Renowned New York-based producer Keith Witty was also involved in the process. Overall, ‘The Imperfectionist’ is an album worth discovering; a slice of wholesome, classy goodness in an otherwise gloomy and complex world.
