NOKA Make Their Debut with Gritty, Potent Cut ‘Breathe’

Marking the debut effort of London-based indie rock outfit NOKA, ‘Breathe’ is a rather simple, yet hard-hitting song. Framed into a nostalgic ‘90s grunge allure, the track unfurls with a certain tenderness, an evocative charge that’s especially obvious in head honcho Mariana Mircheva’s malleable, introspective vocals. That said, there are also gloominess and intensity in the record, all qualities that make it thread the fine line between light and darkness. It’s a sonically and lyrically risky effort, a daring and authentic gem that’s easy to connect with.

The songwriting is also unique, as Mircheva explores a side of parenthood that’s usually never unveiled. As she explains: “It’s about the way raising children can completely absorb your life, how every moment, every breath, revolves around them. You give everything because you love them deeply. But there’s also a quiet truth underneath: in the middle of that love, you can lose the space that belongs just to you.” We appreciate the honesty behind such a statement, as Mariana’s observant and authentic creative flair showcases its worth.

Currently a trio featuring Pedro on guitar and Ana on bass, NOKA are eager to embrace the imperfections in their sound. That’s just how they like it, a tad gritty and rough, certainly loud. ‘Breathe’ is the perfect example of that, with its energetic, decadent guitar riffs and its retro rock flavouring. As a bonus, the lyrical content can also be interpreted from other points of view, such as a sudden breakup or romantic troubles.
