Newcomer Gretchin Shares Their Eclectic Artistry In ‘Petals on the Dash’

Often, artistic self-realization is a long journey, taking years, many records, and perhaps a few mistakes. Eventually though, it will be all worth it: the prize is the ability to create authentic art, fully representing its author’s identity. For talented songstress Gretchin (they/them), this journey took the shape of personal research, informing their newly found Queer identity. After a short hiatus, the London resident returned this year, offering two singles which are different in their aesthetic but similar in their lyricism. If those records are anything to go by, we are expecting Gretchin to blow up the industry pretty soon.

‘Petals on the Dash’, released earlier this year, is a stunningly beautiful slice of mellow indie-pop. Drawing influences from the likes of Girl In Red, the British artist explores an organic, guitar-driven sound, fully anchored in contemporaneity. On the contrary, latest effort ‘Coffe (Voice Memo)’ provides a blissful, comforting acoustic number, showcasing the rawness of Gretchin’s vocals: soothing and controlled, their tone floats freely on honey-like, timeless melodies.

Honestly, it’s some of the best songwriting we have heard this year. We are confident in Gretchin’s bright future. How could it not be? While eclectic in its reference genres, their artistry shares powerful imagery and empowering personal experience, which listeners will quickly connect with.
