We love discovering old records, and in the last few years, there have been many instances of that happening. We are talking about forgotten albums and EPs, obscure recordings that have been kept hidden from the world until now. Our guess is that the ease of self-publishing makes such an endeavour a profitable one. ‘Gardens’ fits the bill. Written by American new wave and punk outfit New Math, the record uncovers a rather interesting and unique story. You see, the album came very close to being released in 1984, having already been printed on shiny new CDs ready to be shipped to stores nationwide.
Yet, New York-based label Brain Eater folded right before that could happen, preventing ‘Gardens’ from being shared with anyone keen to listen. Well, no more: New Math have now released a remastered version of that very same record, under the driving guise of Propeller Sound Recordings. In it, the curious sonic explorer will unearth the eight original tracks from the album, plus a series of archival live recordings captured at Rochester’s own music venue Scorges in 1983.
‘Gardens’ does feel like stepping into a time machine, especially when it comes to the aforementioned live recordings. On that note, ‘Go Devils’ is a rather interesting track, with rolling drum parts and an obscure, new wave-flavoured arrangement. That’s pretty interesting. ‘Gardens’ is also available on CDs and Vinyl.
