Despite having debuted only last year, Swiss-Congolese songstress Nelia Masengu has already confirmed herself as a worthy figure in the alternative R&B space. Building elegant and soulful gems wrapped in French lyricism and luscious melodies, the young creative evokes a cathartic, vivid atmosphere, one that’s also rather personal and introspective. Following up on ‘vu d’en haut’, Masengu has recently unveiled a more eclectic, organic effort, ‘Nazozela lobi’.
Inspired by a trip to Congo, attending her sister’s wedding, Nelia seems to have landed on a winning formula, at least in our humble opinion. Blending mid-tempo afrobeat with her usual R&B smoothness, ‘Nazozela lobi’ explores Masengu’s own roots through traditional Congolese chants, making for a listening experience that’s wholesome and diverse. The talented singer’s vocals are ever present, providing the usual amount of heavenly vibes to an already wonderful piece.
Speaking about the single, Masengu explains: “At its core, it reflects the complexities of family relationships. On one hand, it’s a joyful celebration filled with love and unity, but beneath the surface, it also touches on the tensions and unspoken fears that can exist within a family. That contrast—between festivity and emotional depth—is what makes the track so special to me and is also reflected in the sound landscape of the song.”
