A quick glance at Sjana Rut’s sizeable catalogue reveals a talented songstress at home in a wide variety of settings. From evocative alt-pop to leftfield electronica, passing through cinematic folk gems and Icelandic-core, she can do it all. In fact, that’s one of her main strengths; Rut is what we’d call a holistic creative, an enlightened visionary pursuing a personal, unique artistic path. The Reyjavik-based musician is back today with a rather fierce and empowering anthem, ‘Game Over’, a slice of euphoric pop goodness steeped in resilience and heightened independence.
The single follows up from previous effort ‘Love Me’, and a thread seems to emerge. Sjana is back on her anthemic pop phase, and we couldn’t be happier; that’s a livery that suits her well. Although admittedly, last year’s Icelandic folk album ‘Raunheimar’ felt magical and cathartic too. Well, in 2025, we are done making ourselves small; we are reclaiming what was always ours. For Rut, that means breaking free from an abusive relationship, slowly reconnecting with her inner truth.
Delving deeper into the subject matter, Sjana explains: “The concept is inspired by the 80’s gaming culture and movies that I grew up with as a flashback to the past with a modern twist. The video game symbolizes the controlling environment and by pushing yourself to level up it becomes a celebration of survival.”
