Nefeli Serves Up Emotional Fierceness on ‘Barceloner’

There’s a great deal of storytelling in ‘Barceloner’. Keeping listeners on their toes, the song delves into an unlikely relationship turned sour. In it, Vienna-based songstress Nefeli pushes the main character towards freedom and independence, breaking free from a clearly toxic situation. Told from a passionate female perspective, the single draws inspiration from a variety of sources, be it “the Beatles lyric reference ‘Baby you can drive my car’” or “a mention of the famous Barcelona mosaic, The Kiss of Freedom.”

Nefeli’s lyricism is certainly not metaphorical; she’s going straight to the point, with striking imagery (and a music video) that’s bound to connect with a large audience out there. Part of her upcoming album ‘Trinity’, ‘Barceloner’ finds its overarching ethos in a trilogy of singles exploring the ‘sex, drugs and rock’n’roll’ lifestyle. Yet, the single confronts the ‘sex’ part not from a trivial, libertine perspective, but from an emotional point of view, describing the consequences of an ill-fated affair.

From a sonic standpoint, we have no notes for Nefeli; ‘Barceloner’ sounds catchy, anthemic and fiery, with a chorus that sticks with you for hours. The Austrian creative boasts energetic, nuanced vocals which are a joy to listen to, truly connecting with us all on a deeper level. Speaking about the inspiration behind the piece, Nefeli explains: “I really struggled with the lyrics for this one, I didn’t want it to be cheesy. The phrase ‘Barcelona rest in peace’ was the spark, and then it all slowly came together.”
