We are not newbies to Nathalie Miller’s emotive, elegant indie-pop imprint. Writing about the project’s previous EP ‘made especially for you’ earlier this year, we proudly described Miller’s music as “akin to stepping into a room laced with soft walls: the aural experience is soothing, playful and comforting”. We stand behind our words: Nathalie holds a truly wholesome artistic allure, crafting material that’s rich and eclectic in its sonic references, personal and reflective in its lyricism.
‘kansas’ is the strongest evidence of that. Marking the American songstress’s comeback effort, the track embraces a rather grandiose and expansive character, with velvety dream-pop textures exploding into a soaring orchestral outro, one that feels both anthemic and ethereal, certainly cinematic. Such a potent record is accompanied by a fitting music video, directed by Pamer Wells and Christopher Consoli.
A platonic breakup cut, ‘kansas’ finds further cultural strength in the peculiar storytelling, describing the emotional unbalance in Miller’s friendships with men. As she explains: “In a lot of my past friendships with men, I was really hyper aware of being a girl and playing the role of emotional support mother or girlfriend without receiving that support back.”
