Packed with euphoric rock’n’roll energy and honest lyricism, ‘This Is Over’ marks the latest effort by Oakland-based songstress Naomi Neva. Built over roaring pop-rock guitars and loud, bold vocals, the track is also the perfect example of ‘do as I say, not as I do’. As the American creative explains: “It’s about realising you’re not going to get what you want from someone, and that it’s time to stop pretending. It’s also a lie: I’m still friends with both of the people who inspired it, and that is still a mistake.” We’ll give you a pass, Naomi: the music is just too good.
Born from personal experience and heartfelt introspection, ‘This Is Over’ functions as a cathartic outlet, allowing Neva to vent all of her frustration and annoyance towards a painful situation, hoping to find a way to move past it. It’s also quite vulnerable, with the talented artist sharing a hidden part of her consciousness with the wider world. That takes courage and fierceness, and judging by what we hear in ‘This Is Over’, those qualities are central to the project.
Recorded and produced at Hear Me Roar Studio by an all-female team, ‘This is Over’ is everything we would ever wish from a contemporary rock anthem. That said, we also love the hints at the 90s and early ‘2000s… lots to discover, if one listens carefully.
