Nadine Makalew: “I just knew that music was my calling”

Crowning an artistic journey that started in Germany and completed in Indonesia, singer and songwriter Nadine Makalew is eager to debut with her first EP, ‘SONOROUS’. A collection of four pop gems, the record was written in collaboration with fellow writer Nadine Traoré.

Together, the pair crafts material that’s relatable and drenched in personal experience, balanced over a charming sonic outlook. From the exuberant and fierce character of ‘Don’t lie to me’ to the poignancy of ‘Confession’, the duo seems to be at home in a vast variety of settings.

What’s to note, is Makalew’s refined vocal abilities, able to hypnotise the listeners into full attention. Controlled, intimate yet charming, the young talent has the right attitude for a successful project. Not to be forgotten, she’s also an amazing piano player, evidence of her music-driven commitment.

Intrigued by the EP, we caught up with Nadine Makalew to find out more about her artistry and future goals… Interview below!

Hey Nadine, how is it going? some of our readers might not be familiar with your project, how would you describe yourself, in a few words?

I will describe my project as a journey of two musicians from the same background, with the same name and with the same passion, music.

Your current work is the result of a long journey; What first drew you to making music?

I just knew that music was my calling for a very long time. That’s why I ended up living in Europe for so long, because I know I will pursue my career in the music world.

If you had the opportunity to pick any artists in the world for a collaboration, who would be your first choice? (and second choice, perhaps?)

Definitely Tori Kelly. Second choice is hard but H.E.R is also on my list 🙂

You recently released your debut EP, a collaboration with fellow talent Nadine Traoré. ‘SONOROUS’ collects four soulful and charming tracks; what does the record mean to you as an artist?

This is indeed my first debut EP under my name. This record is truly a stepping stone for me to expand my music through new listeners. The tracks are a combination and definition of us starting our journey and figuring out ourselves, not only in music but also in life, generally speaking.

Could you describe the writing relationship between you and Nadine? Do you collaborate remotely or in the same room?

We have created this project for quite some time. First, we collected the songs until we came up with the conclusions to release those four songs. We started by playing live for certain events until we decide to release them. It’s been a long road but we were studying together and we played together very often.

How did you find the music scene in Germany?

I think Germany has one of the biggest markets and opportunities in Europe besides the UK in my opinion. Actually, what I like about Germany or Europe in general is that you can play not only in Germany itself but also the other neighbour countries that could expand your connections.

Artistically speaking, what challenges have the last two years presented you with?

Being consistent and staying motivated is difficult. Especially if you have to deal with rent, bills etc. So finding the balance to create the space for creativity while you’re dealing with several things is indeed challenging.

What are the next steps for your project? Anything exciting on the horizon?

Yes and yes. I am working on my debut album hopefully released in autumn next year. There will be several singles released as a teaser.
