My Glass World Draw from the Archives with Latest Effort ‘River of Light’

Embodying new wave and 90s-leaning pop-rock influences, ‘River of Light’ feels brooding and crepuscular, moving with quiet confidence and hidden melancholia.

It’s already been six years since the period we all tragically remember as the Covid era, an event whose consequences loom large even today. A lot of folks suddenly found themselves at home with not much to do, and for many, art-making provided a heartfelt answer to that, as well as a cathartic tool to decode a problematic present. That’s also true for British duo My Glass World, as they recorded and wrote a bunch of material that never quite saw the light of day, eventually. Well, until now. ‘River of Light’ was recently released as the group’s first record of the year, following up on their previous offering ‘It Only Takes a Minute’ (which we did celebrate here).

One of the peculiar aspects of ‘River of Light’ is that it was written during Covid, and it belongs to a larger body of work that is still largely unreleased. Now, while we don’t know what exactly lies in such an extensive collection of songs, we are confident that we’ll see more of them out in the near future, after all, art (music in this case) deserves to be heard. ‘River of Light’ confirms the heightened quality that propels My Glass World’s nostalgic artistry. Embodying new wave and 90s-leaning pop-rock influences, the track feels brooding and crepuscular, moving with quiet confidence and hidden melancholia.

It’s a formula that well fits the London-based pair’s overarching creative ethos, constantly oscillating between meaningful melodism and icy, dark tones. ‘River of Light’ is surprisingly upbeat, but never quite descending into brighter territories. It is simply a more diverse version of what My Glass World stand for. Recorded at Famos Times Studios, the new release features Jamie Telford and Sean Read alongside collaborators Jon Kensington, Martyn Kaine, and Little Barrie.
