‘Destroyer’ does exactly what it says on the tin. The track’s hypnotising, noisy and massive beat is also its stand-out feature. It sort of reminded us of Portishead’s ‘Machine Gun’, at least in its rhythmic features. Other than some distant industrial vibes, ‘Destroyer’ finds itself steeped in nostalgic British synth-pop and new wave, with a more contemporary synthwave contour. In essence, it’s a melting pot of leftfield influences, making the listening experience rather striking and hard-hitting, perhaps unforgettable.
Anticipating an upcoming LP, the track showcases the raw, vivid aural character possessed by Mutual Shock. A project headed by Seattle-based creative Dan Powers, such an endeavour finds its global influences in coldwave and darkwave territories. ‘Destroyer’ is an honourable chapter in its history, with ‘Body Together’ being the latest released single.
