Mutant Ego Drops Reflective, Hazy EP ‘real’

…It’s here that we meet the musical voyager behind the record, Mutant Ego. We see him travelling through shoegaze, dream pop, darkwave and everything in between.

Reading through Mutant Ego‘s liner notes, there’s one expression that particularly struck us: ‘the uncomfortable experience of being understood’, here mentioned as one of the main themes that supports the album. That sentence sounded incredibly observant and relevant, as it goes to the core of the difficulty of connecting with other human beings, as well as how hard it can be to practice true emotional vulnerability. ‘real’ speaks about all of that and more, including relationships, addiction, and uncertainty.

We can safely declare ‘real’ as an introspective, meaningful offering, one that doesn’t necessarily overly focus on its lyrical aspect, instead delivering a wealth of luscious, spacious guitar tones and lo-fi drum beats. It’s here that we meet the musical voyager behind the record, Mutant Ego. We see him travelling through shoegaze, dream pop, darkwave and everything in between. The result is musical goodness that’s plastic and malleable, with a slightly nostalgic twist.

Mutant Ego is adamant about the hidden reasoning for his artistic endeavour; as we are told: “For an artist who tends to be private and emotionally guarded in everyday life, songwriting offers an unusually direct and unfiltered means of expression.” That’s it: that’s where ‘real’ truly shines. It feels alternative and unique; it doesn’t follow the beaten path, and it doesn’t look for commercial glory. Instead, it provides a unique entry point into the project’s creative universe.
