Following up on February’s ‘Dragon’s Tail in the Sky’, downtempo duo HoneyBones have recently unveiled their latest effort, a sombre, melancholic song steeped in mysticism and legendary European folklore. Aptly named ‘The Call of Baba Yaga’, the record sees multi-award-winning musician, author, and filmmaker Melinda Joy and musician, filmmaker, photographer, and digital artist Juro Kosec reuniting once again.
From a sonic standpoint, the single feels as mysterious and haunting as one might expect from such a visionary duo. Rooted in spirituality and ancient tales of magical beings, ‘The Call of Baba Yaga’ moves with alternative allure through darkwave and downtempo electronica, making for a track that feels crepuscular and hazy, the perfect match for the current Halloween season. Yet, this is not a seasonal release; this is a manifesto for what we can expect from HoneyBones in the future.
Delving deeper into the record’s creative ethos, we are told: “It explores the witchy archetype of Baba Yaga, inspired by the duo’s shared Eastern European heritage and the wild landscapes of Iceland.” We wouldn’t expect anything less from Joy and Kosec: hard-hitting, meaningful music and an art practice that goes beyond the world as we know it. Somehow, Melinda and Juro bottle all of the nature-driven escapism available to them, and offer it to us in aural form.
