We are not newbies to Mohawk Castle boundary-pushing, expansive artistry. In fact, writing about ‘I Killed the Velvet Underground’ earlier this year, we celebrated the project as “guiding a nuanced effort that pens dreamy, ethereal gems with a distinct bedroom/indie quality”. We stand by our words, especially now that we are able to take a wider look at Mohawk Castle’s expressive, leftfield aural formula, thanks to his latest album ‘Die For Love’.
A contemporary and kaleidoscopic record, ‘Die For Love’ seeks to challenge our perception. Boasting an intricate multi-genre identity, the album navigates arty indie matter tinged with electronica and trap flavourings, not forgetting the occasional hazy guitar tones. This gives way to contrasting episodes, for instance the sweet, melancholic and atmospheric ‘Cold Beat’ and its raw, gloomy and gritty follow-up ‘The Storm is Coming’. Mohawk Castle’s otherworldly and prophetic vocals are perhaps one of the few constants in such a phenomenal record.
Lyrically, ‘Die For Love’ is deeply introspective and inquisitive, delving deeper into the Californian creative’s troubled consciousness. As he explains: “The good times, the bad times, the end times. My father’s cancer diagnosis and fight were a major inspiration for ‘Die for Love’. His resilience and my mother’s strength to offer him were a masterclass in devotion. This album is about devotion and revelation. Love and death. Youth and being used. Shedding tears and shedding skin.”
