Miss Ashley Jean Reflects on Romanticism in Introspective EP ‘Off the Hinge’

A highly personal and heartfelt EP, ‘Off the Hinge’ reveals all of the meaningful introspection and self-awareness boasted by Los Angeles-based songstress Miss Ashley Jean. Following up on her 2023 debut album ‘Seasonal Unravelling’, the talented creative confirms once again her bedroom-pop prowess, offering a record that’s wholesome, personal and honest, while retaining a rather eclectic genre-core. You see, if the fuzzy and rowdy rock flair of ‘Lesson’ intimidates you, then you might relate more to the cinematic, ethereal soundscapes in ‘Digital Roses’.

The common thread is provided by Jean’s luscious, tender vocals, uncovering a highly cathartic reflection on romanticism, modern dating, and the many ways we can willfully improve ourselves. Next to the overall guidance of Miss Ashley Jean, ‘Off the Hinge’ also benefits from the production expertise of Sean McVerry, grooves from We Are Scientists’ drummer Keith Carne, and piano from Jonathan Jones. There seems to be good alchemy between the team, with the EP ending up as a cohesive and progressive body of work.

Delving deeper into her songwriting, Miss Ashley Jean explains: “‘Off the Hinge’ offers a safe space for romantics frustrated with the disconnect in modern dating. It made me aware of my own toxic traits of trying to conform and people-please to get noticed. But you can’t be loved if you aren’t changing from that same space. This record is the most romantic gift I have given myself.”
