If you are ever in the mood for some striking old-school hip-hop, Mic Nickels is who you should turn to. Hailing from New York, the talented emcee, rapper and author boasts a long career in the American urban scene, delivering hypnotising, intense bars with a potent nostalgic flavouring. ‘Against The World’ is the perfect evidence of that. A playful and groovy episode, the track is taken from Nickels’ overarching album ‘The Impressionist’, a collection of wholesome rap pieces crafted with Serbian producer Kiza.
Fellow legendary emcees Rockness Monsta (one half of Heltah Skeltah from the Boot Camp Clik) and Rah Digga (female superstar member from Busta Rhymes’ Flipmode Squad) join Mic on ‘Against The World’, enriching the listening experience in a positive, eclectic way. Seminal hip-hop tropes are on full display here, from strategic vinyl scratch effects to soulful samples, passing through gritty synth tones and heavy drum sounds.
‘Against The World’ has also been given a stylish, hard-hitting music video directed by filmmaker Jamal Hall. Drenched in 90s references, the visuals “place Mic and his crew in and around a gritty New York warehouse. Flipping between desolate, hazy rooms and a rusty, bolted railway overpass—the setting feels like the true underbelly of the city.”
