We absolutely adore ‘going nowhere’. It’s the kinda record that captured our attention instantly, and for good reason. It’s exactly what we were looking for. A lush, evocative mixture of shoegaze escapism and alt-rock melancholy, all soaked into an aural livery that constantly oscillates between the grittiness of the guitars and the dreaminess of the vocals. What more could you wish for? Spearheaded by Nashville-based songstress Mel Denisse, ‘going nowhere’ provides a striking look at the project’s committed artistry.
Boasting a long creative career, Denisse enjoys writing and producing with a rather dualistic approach, boldly described by her as “controlled collision”. As she explains: “I like to ‘frankenstein’ a track. If a heavy riff and a delicate melody look wrong together on paper, that’s exactly what pulls me in.” That’s exactly what truly attracts us to ‘going nowhere’. A feeling of heightened emotional intensity wrapped in fierce and melancholic tones.
Inspired by fantasy fiction, the single draws from epic themes of survival and resilience, with open-handed storytelling that will connect with listeners in many different ways. We know one thing for sure: you won’t remain neutral to the song. It’s just too magnetic and brooding, with Mel Denisse’s misty, sharp vocals leading the charge. “If the song makes you feel a gentle gut-punch–that’s the point. I’m slipping mirrors into the track so you have to sit with whatever stares back”, the American creative reiterates.
There’s an EP coming early next year – stay tuned!
