Maya Lumen Pays Tribute to Her Cat in ‘Maynard’s Song’

Californian musician Maya Lumen dedicates a haunting and brooding instrumental piece to her beloved back cat. Meet ‘Maynard’s Song’.

Fiercely self-described as ‘progressive desperado’, Maya Lumen’s eclectic and haunting musical output has fully kidnapped our attention. ‘Maynard’s Song’ is the perfect evidence of that. An instrumental effort, the track enjoys a bold and partly cinematic dive into rock-leaning allure with hints of psychedelia and gritty energy. Despite not having a lyrical component, ‘Maynard’s Song’ is deeply meaningful, a quality that’s expressed through melodic storytelling: rolling drums, icy guitars… Everything plays a role in making the record so vivid and brooding.

As it’s often the case with talented musician and composer Maya Lumen, known by day as Jaqueline F. Moore, ‘Maynard’s Song’ emerges from her observant and curious character. You see, Maynard is the name of her cat, a much-loved pet that provided emotional comfort during a particularly dark period for Lumen. ‘Maynard’s Song’ ships with an awesome music video featuring mesmerising footage of Maya’s band performing the song in hypnotic settings.

Delving deeper into the meaningful storytelling that propels the record, we are told: “In some of Lumen’s darkest hours, a music-loving black cat, aptly named after Tool’s Maynard James Keenan, illuminated her world, coming to her rescue when she needed him most. Originally plucked and inspired by teenage friend  Dash Kirby, ‘Maynard’s Song’ sulks and creeps much like the late feline friend who inspired it.”
