With influences ranging from The Kinks to Silver Jews, New Orleans-based singer/songwriter Max Bien Kahn has crafted a unique and distinctive sound that he can be proud to call his own. Just a few days ago, the artist released his brand new album ‘When I Cross It Off’, and I found myself drawn specifically to its seventh track ‘Afternoon’. With a Pete Quaife-esque bassline, a warmly strummed acoustic guitar, and Kahn’s rich and enticing vocals, it’s a tune that’s wormed its way into my heart and soul. Straightforward, universally accessible, and just deeply honest and open.
Max says that his new album is about “Big things and little things. Grief, heartbreak, new love, sex, making coffee, walking dogs, and getting through your day, one task at a time”. I told you he was honest! And that’s really the beauty of this musician. His heart-on-sleeve and emotionally transparent approach to songwriting is simply too enduring to ignore!
The retro and nostalgic sounds that emanate from ‘Afternoon’ take me back to simpler times. Times of less pressure, tension, and adversity. You can’t put a price on that as far as I’m concerned! Thank you for the music Max, and I can’t wait to get stuck into this new album!
