We are rather impressed by Maverick Smith’s incredible productivity. Having just released their second album this year, prophetically titled ‘We Make Fire They Make Smoke’, the American outfit delivers a strong follow-up to February’s ‘For Streams’, a record that gained them a fair bit of global attention. Guided by head honcho Sean Boynes and core members Paige Bosic, Jin Courtney, Charlie Kovach, and Chuck Ellis, Maverick Smith have mastered a heartwarming, expansive formula, one that is steeped in rock, alt-folk, blues and punk character, all drenched in a wealth of lyrical prowess.
Balanced between old-school euphoric pieces and more elegant, poised and expressive efforts, ‘We Make Fire They Make Smoke’ also benefits from a classical eclectic addition thanks to the Maverick Smith Orchestra. Produced by Boynes and Dan Bozek, the record was recorded at Aardvark Studios in Steubenville, OH. Featuring nine electrifying pieces, the album is further enriched by Paige’s evocative, lush vocal tone.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the group’s work, Sean Boynes explains: “Sometimes it leans country, sometimes punk or blues. We don’t stop it. If it feels honest, we chase it down. Let someone else figure out what to call it.” That’s a refreshingly honest ethos, one that we are confident will go a long way in gaining the band a larger audience.
