Born from a place of anger and disbelief, ‘That’s What People Do’ is a rebellious, resilient reaction to the gloomy reality around MatAre’s everyday living. Based in Atlanta, US, the gifted musician and songwriter has been a keen observer of the political and societal happenings in his country, so much so that he decided to use music as a cathartic tool, releasing all the frustration into a slick, haunting piece.
‘That’s What People Do’ reveals its fiery nature in its sonic livery, with a great deal of darkwave and “Russian doomer music” offering an interesting change from MatAre’s usual programming. Leaving behind indie and new wave references, the rising artist finds a worthy refuge in lo-fi guitar tones, dark textures and an overall cold, otherworldly character, one that actually works very well with MatAre’s vocals, so much so that we’d like him to delve deeper into the same theme.
Anticipating an LP expected later this year, ‘Extinction Burst’, the American creative seems fully in sync with the fragmented cultural landscape around him. As always, art reflects reality. As he explains: “Right now, a lot of artists are doing what I am doing, and it is basically giving a voice to a new generation of angry people with the government. I began the year hoping to ignore everything that was going on, but it became clear that I had to make music that makes a statement about what is wrong at the moment.”
